I have used PS for years now, going through the various versions and now using the most current. I can honestly say I have a decent understanding of it and how to create things, but I don't consider my work to be great. There are still many questions I have and many things I don't yet know, despite my years of dabbling with it. It seems every time they release an updated version of Photoshop I find myself with new questiosn and no time to research the changes myself and learn more about how to use the program. I hoped to be able to pick up some new ideas and techniques for improving my images. My biggest problem is learning how to control file size as I edit and embellish things.
I honestly didn't learn a whole lot of new things, though. I feel the author did a great job of covering terminology and explaining things. But it didn't teach me anything new about Photoshop that I didn't already know. I am thinking perhaps I might have my oldest read through it and get some ideas, since he is a complete newbie when it comes to photo editing and graphics design. I think this might help him start off and begin learning.
I do think there was great content in the book. But I also wish there were more visuals. I am a very visual learner and rely on screenshots and pictures to help me better understand concepts. I think there were plenty of opportunities for the author to include some images to help clarify and solidify points being made, further reinforcing the concepts and learning. If the book had more images, screenshots, and examples, I would have given it a much higher rating.
That said, the book has its positives and it has its needs. It wasn't a book suited for my level, but still contained some great information. If you are looking for something to help you with the skills you already have, skip this book and find another. If you are new to Photoshop or just beginning to use it, this may be of some help.
