My son came home from school one day not too long ago with this book in hardback form, checked out from the library. He told me about the authors visiting their school and giving a presentation. He was very excited about this, to see the success of students who attended the school he is currently going to, and to see them in person. He quickly devoured the book and checked it back in to the library before I had the opportunity to read it. So, I purchased a copy in Kindle format for me to read.
It only took me a few days to read through the story, reading around the busy life that I have. Each time I picked the book up again I found myself immediately drawn back in. The authors did a great job of developing the plot and carrying the reader through the storyline. The story is told from multiple view points, but the authors have placed the name of the person telling the story at the top of each chapter so you always know who is speaking. A few times I didn't look at that and continued with the story, confusing myself with which point of view it was. But a quick glance would clear it up, if I wasn't able to figure it out on my own by the point of view.
The story was well developed, though I did feel at times it was a bit rushed and there was room for more detail. At each challenge the characters faced, the telling was done well, building up and creating tension, but the climax reached a tad too soon leaving me feeling there should have been a bit more detail to expand the climax out and lead the reader back down to the next part of the story. It was for this reason I did not give it the full 5 stars, but know that with time the authors will develop skills that improve their writing overall. I was impressed with the amount of challenges the characters faced and the creativity of the story as the authors led the reader through them, and was pleased they were not predictable.
I don't know what impresses me more - the fact that this story was first started when the authors were in school, mere 7th and 8th graders, or the creativity of the story itself. I have read many a sci-fi and fantasy story, but this was a new take on time travel and magic, one I have not seen in stories thus far. The boys have great talent for writing and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for them. I imagine they will only get better as the years go by and time adds life experience to the knowledge they draw from. I look forward to seeing more from these talented young men and can't wait for book 2 to be released.
If you are looking for an entertaining read full of magic, suspense, and excitement, look no further. Great story and highly recommended.
